peccaries are sometimes called "musk hogs" due to an oder they emit from glands on their rump and near used to recognize other members of the same heard or mark territory
they have very close social relationships and live in hierarchical herds of 5-15 members
Location of peccaries range from South-Western United States through Central America and into South America. In South and Central America, peccaries prefer to live in tropical regions while they prefer dessert areas in North America.
Reproduction
During breeding season, a male will perform a short tending bond with a female in heat (estrus). Males will sometimes mate with more than one female if there cycles of heat are synchronized. Females have litters of 2-4 young. Litter sizes vary depending on age of female and amount of rainfall influencing nutritional stress.
Habitat
Peccaries inhabit deserts, subtropical and tropical grasslands, savannas, shrublands, flooded grasslands and savannas and subtropical and tropical dry broadleaf forests. In addition to the wild, peccaries are well adapted to habitats shared with humans such as cities and agricultural land.
Nutrition/Diet
Omnivore Due to their seminar region, their diet mainly consists of succulent plants such as yuccas and prickly pears. Other items in their diet include forbs, browse, acorns, cacti, berries, grass, roots, beans and nuts.
